CBD stands for cannabidiol, a naturally occurring molecule that belongs to the class of cannabinoids. These are the terpeno-phenolic compounds produced in glandular trichomes of cannabis plants, and cannabidiol (CBD) is one of at least 85 active cannabinoids identified in cannabis.

More than 80 cannabinoids have been isolated from cannabis plants so far. The most common cannabinoids in resins produced in cannabis plant trichromes are cannabidiol (CBD), delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabichromene (CBC) and cannabigerol (CBG).

Within the plants cannabinoids are synthesized and accumulated in the form of carboxylic acids (CBDA, THCA, CBCA and CBGA), which are transformed into neutral forms by decarboxylation.
The specific reactions in biosynthesis of cannabinoids start with the enzyme catalyzed condensation of terpenoid geranylpyrophosphate (GPP) with phenolic compound olivetolic acid (OA) into CBGA, which is a direct precursor for CBDA, THCA and CBCA. The conversions of CBGA are catalyzed by specific enzymes: CBDA synthase, THCA synthase and CBCA synthase. The rate of conversion oc CBGA to CBDA, THCA and CBCA and consequently their relative abundance depends on the genetic properties of the cannabis plant.
Cannabinoids have been found to stimulate endocannabinoid system, thus helping to prevent disease and promote health. Furthermore, cannabinoids have been found to exhibit antioxidant properties superior to those of vitamin A and E.
In 1992 the identification of a compound that binds to cannabinoid receptor lead to understanding of elements that form the endocannabinoid system. This compound was isolated from porcine brain and named anandamide.
Endocannabinoid system is a complex system of receptors, ligand and enzymes in human body that helps to regulate fundamental processes in central and peripheral nervous system. Currently there are two known subtypes of cannabinoid receptors: the CB 1 and the CB2.

The CB 1 subtype is mostly found in central nervous system (brain), whereas CB2 subtype takes part in the immune system and formation of blood cells. The CB1 receptors are responsible for psychotropic effects of certain cannabinoids and CB2 are believed to be responsible for anti-inflammatory and other therapeutic effects of cannabis.
Resins extracted from cannabis plants, especially those containing high fraction of CBD, are being recognized for various medical effects, especially for potential treatment of chronic pain, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, schizophrenia and other neurological disorders and cancer.
CBD has also been found to modulate fear, anxiety and stress. Generally, medical properties of CBD are antiemetic, anticonvulsant, antipsychotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-tumorial and anti-depressant. Pharmacologically, CBD only poorly binds to the known cannabinoid receptors CB 1 and CB2. However, it stimulates endocannabinoid system suppressing the enzyme that breaks down anandamide, which enhances body's natural endocannabinoid response. CBD also stimulates release of endocannabinoid 2-Arachidonoyglycerol (2-AG) which also activates CB2 receptors in peripheral nervous and immune system.
